Wisconsin currently ranks 10th in the nation for registered bioproduct companies under the BioPreferred Program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture.
The term "biobased product" defines an item, other than food or feed, produced from plant or animal sources. The plant and animal sources are agricultural or forestry materials that can be re-supplied, in contrast, to the one time use of most petroleum based materials.
There are a variety of significant reasons why biobased products provide excellent alternatives for existing products:
-
Biobased products are domestically produced and support the agriculture economy.
-
Biobased products reduce carbon emmisions and level our country's dependency on foreign energy.
-
Biobased products support our farmers and rural communities.
